Paying for a pioneer: Skokie's SurePayroll Inc. is acquiring the customer base of Florida's Virtual Payroll Inc. The Florida firm was the first to market online payroll services to small businesses in the mid-1990s. Michael Alter, senior vice-president of SurePayroll, declined to disclose the deal terms or the number of customers his firm gains through the transaction. The publicity-shy Skokie firm has "thousands" of customers and about 50 employees, he says.
