Small businesses increased their employee base in September 2004, but the average small
business paycheck got smaller.

Regional Results
Regionally, the Midwest, South and West continue to follow the national trend – more
jobs, smaller paychecks. The Northeast is trending in exactly the opposite direction;
small businesses are not increasing in size in the Northeast, but their salaries are
trending up.
