National Small Business Trends

Small businesses continued to increase employee headcount. Small business paychecks continue to trend downward.

The SurePayroll Hiring Index, which tracks the size of U.S. small businesses, was 10,252 at the end of the Third Quarter. That was up 0.59% from the end of August, suggesting that small businesses continue to ramp up in size to handled increased business.

The SurePayroll Pay Index, which tracks the average paycheck amounts at U.S. small businesses, was 967 at the end of the Third Quarter. That was down 1.12% from the end of August, suggesting that the average small business employee earned a little bit less in September than they did in August.
