National Small Business Trends
Year-to-date, small businesses have increased employee headcount by 0.4%. The national SurePayroll Hiring Index, which measures the number of employees within small businesses, ended September at 10,480, a 14-point decrease from August. We closed 2004 at 10,435.
The decrease in hiring we saw in September was noteworthy because small business owners had only had one "down" month for hiring in the past seventeen months prior to last month. It appears that the hurricanes and other negative economic factors finally have slowed down an otherwise very resilient small business economy.
On an annualized basis, we are tracking on a 0.6% increase in small business size. That's significantly less than the 4.4% growth we experienced in 2004.
Small business paychecks were up in September. The SurePayroll Pay Index clocked in at 930 at the end of September, a 2-point increase from August.
Small business salaries are now down 2.1% year to date. September's 2.1% year-to-date drop translates to an annualized decline of 2.8%.
In 2004, small business salaries dropped 4.8% on average. Based on September's data, we will have a smaller salary drop in 2005 than we had in 2004.
