National Small Business Trends

The national SurePayroll Hiring Index, which measures the number of employees within small businesses, ended April at 10,440, thirteen points down from where the index stood at the end of March.

That's our eighth straight month of negative or flat hiring in the small business economy.

Small business salaries, in contrast, are still on the rise. Small business paychecks were up in April, for the eighth month in a row. The SurePayroll Pay Index clocked in at 982 at the end of April, a nine point increase from March.
