The national SurePayroll Hiring Index, which measures the number of employees within small businesses, ended August at 10,431, down five points from where the index stood at the end of July.
That’s eleven months of negative or flat hiring in the small business economy in the past twelve months – only June showed a slight uptick in hiring, and that uptick was short-lived.
Small business salaries, in contrast, are still on the rise. Small business paychecks were up in August, for the eleventh straight month. The SurePayroll Pay Index clocked in at 1001 at the end of August, an eleven-point increase from July.
