Small business hiring rose in January and ended the month up 0.3%.
The SurePayroll Hiring Index, which measures small business employment trends, ended the month at 11,306, a 32-point increase from December.
On a national basis, this was our 26th straight month of increased hiring in the small business economy. However, the increases have been fairly flat in the past five months.
The SurePayroll Pay Index, which measures small business salary trends, dropped one point in January to 1,027. We have now had twelve consecutive months of declining small business salaries but January was the smallest decline in the past five months, suggesting that salary drops are slowing down somewhat.
