Small business hiring was up 0.2 percent in March. Salaries were down 0.9 percent.
The SurePayroll Hiring Index, which measures small business employment trends, ended the month at 11,368, a 27-point increase from February.
We've seen 28 consecutive months of increased hiring in the small business economy.
Small business salary trends dropped for the 14th consecutive month. The SurePayroll Pay Index dropped nine points in March to 1,010.
March was the largest one-month decline in salaries that we've seen since December 2004. The monthly SurePayroll Scorecard data for March 2009 can be found in the table below.
