Small business hiring is up from the previous month, bringing us to a 2.6 percent year-to-date increase. Small business salaries continue to head in the opposite direction, with a year-to-date decline of eight percent.
The SurePayroll Hiring Index is now 11,571, up 48 points from October. The SurePayroll Pay Index dropped to 947, down seven points from October. The SurePayroll Contractor Index jumped another seven points to 4.39 percent from October (same percentage increase as seen from September to October), suggesting that small businesses remain heavily reliant on independent contractors.
According to our survey of small business owners conducted in the last week of November 2009, optimism levels increased nine percentage points over October, with 59% of business owners saying they are optimistic about the small business economy at this time.
