SurePayroll to Offer Small Business 401(k)

Sure401k to Provide Affordable 401(k) and Owner-Only 401(k)

GLENVIEW, Ill. — July 16, 2007 — Online payroll provider SurePayroll announced today that it is offering an affordable online 401(k) program, Sure401k, to small business employers. Details about the new program are available at www.surepayroll.com/product/401k.

Sure401k will provide a cost-friendly online 401(k) plan for less than $85 a month, minus a one-time set-up fee, and is ideal for small businesses that want a simpler, more flexible and affordable 401(k) plan. There are no minimum employee restrictions; businesses that are run exclusively by the owners, partners and spouses can implement an owner-only 401(k), or Solo(k) plan, for $12.50 a month. SurePayroll will also offer a $250 discount on set-up fees for regular 401(k)s, until October 1, 2007.

Additionally, Sure401k features will include:

  • Access to more than 320 mutual funds in 15 asset categories from companies such as Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, Vanguard and more, along with low-fee index funds and lifestyle retirement funds
  • Flexible plan designs (Roth and Safe Harbor features available)
  • Full-service recordkeeping, administration and compliance testing
  • Free customer support
  • Convenient, online plan management for employers and employees
  • Integration with payroll

Sure401k was developed for SurePayroll by ePlan Services, a Denver-based company that specializes in creating private-labeled, online 401(k) products for financial service companies. Using its proprietary technology platform, ePlan Services provides all the participant recordkeeping and plan administration services necessary to manage the plan, including enrollment, transaction management and government reporting.

“SurePayroll has demonstrated its excellence in providing critical payroll and tax-filing services for small businesses,” says Mark Gutrich, president of ePlan Services. “So, adding a payroll-integrated 401(k) plan devoted to small businesses is a logical next step.”

SurePayroll President Michael Alter says that adding the convenience of an online 401(k) service will help busy small business owners.

“With its seamless integration into SurePayroll’s online payroll system, Sure401k is another great way to simplify back-office financial tasks for our customers, without sacrificing the breadth of funds that are not always offered to small businesses.”

Small business owners that choose Sure401k are not required to be current SurePayroll customers, although SurePayroll customers will have the added convenience of Sure401k integration with their online payroll process.

Sure401k to Address Unique Beliefs Held by Small Business Employers

Recently, SurePayroll asked small business owners about the impact of 401(k)s on their business. Of the 71 percent of owners who do not provide 401(k) benefits, most perceive cost as the main obstacle, followed by the belief that their employees do not care about or demand 401(k)s. Many owners also believe that 401(k)s are too cumbersome to administer and not an option for small businesses.

Alter believes that these survey results demonstrate a need for a less intimidating, easily understood retirement savings plan for small business owners.

“Many 401(k) plans in the market today target larger companies, making them pricey and confusing to small business owners. The net effect is that many business owners delay making the decision to research 401(k) options and thus neglect saving for their own retirement,” says Alter. “Sure401k is easy to understand, flexible and affordable. Plus, it manages all the related IRS form filings and creates an easier 401(k) experience.”

One small business employer who provides 401(k) benefits to his employees responded to the SurePayroll survey with this advice. “A small employer should plan for retirement because no one else is going to plan it for you. Also, you should reward the employees along the way by including them in a retirement plan. Remember, they contribute towards your success and how much you can invest in your retirement.”

Alter says that 401(k)s are no longer the exception but expected by today’s small business workforce.

“With more than 34 million people self-employed or employed by a small business, this is a bigger issue than ever for small business employers who need to compete for top talent.”
