How to Avoid Phishing Scams

Tip 4: Change Passwords Frequently

It's possible that you fell prey to a phishing email in the past and the thief is simply waiting for the best time to victimize you.

As such, it's a good idea to change your passwords frequently, just to be on the safe side. When creating a password, use a mnemonic device. For example, instead of the password "sushi" use something like "mFsrinhOB" which might stand for "My favorite sushi restaurant is No Hana on Broadway." To make it even tougher, mix lower case letters, upper case letters, numbers, and special characters together. Complex passwords won't protect you from phishing per se, but they will protect you from another breed of Web criminal: password hackers who use sophisticated programs to crack your password and access your accounts.

It's also a good idea to use many different passwords. If you only have one and an attacker accesses it via phishing, database hacking or password cracking, he might try it out on many of your online accounts. So, be sure to choose unique passwords for each of your accounts.

If you must record your passwords in writing, put them in a safe place.
