Welcome to the SurePayroll minute.

I’m Michael Alter.

It’s expensive to make a bad hire.

To be sure you’ve done everything you can to get the right person for the job, consider these important steps.

First, create a formal job description... even if you feel the job title speaks for itself.

Include clear examples of duties, and how you’ll measure success.

This way, employees won’t be surprised by the demands of the job.

Use targeted recruiting.

Advertising on job Web sites is a popular way to recruit, but it doesn’t always bring in the best candidates.

Consider advertising in publications your target candidates read, and reach out to organizations they may belong to.

Finally, don’t forget to listen.

You need to ask the right questions in the interview... but listening to a candidate’s answers is even more important.

Does this person seem passionate about the role?

Is he or she the right fit for your company culture?

The candidate’s overall demeanor during the interview will let you know if they’re the right hire.

For the simple answer to small business issues, I’m Michael Alter with your SurePayroll Minute.
