No business owner wants to face a discrimination lawsuit - it's damaging to your bottom line and your reputation. This small business video minute explains why having a strong non-discrimination policy is so important to your small business administration. It discusses the need for a formal, written policy, and encourages you to communicate the rules of employee conduct clearly and consistently.
Video TranscriptWelcome to the SurePayroll Minute. I’m Michael Alter. Harassment and discrimination lawsuits cost the small business market billions of dollars a year. Your business can decrease the chances of a harassment or discrimination lawsuit by establishing a firm non-discrimination and sexual harassment policy and communicating that policy. Be sure your employees and independent contractors are aware of the policy. It isn't enough to state in your employee handbook that your company doesn't tolerate discrimination or harassment. Your policy must give a definition of each, and provide examples of improper conduct. To ensure the policy is understood, provide employees with a printed copy of the policy, and meet with them on a yearly basis to review it and answer questions. Tell them that you take the policy seriously and that they should as well. Every employee should sign a document that states that they have read and understand the policy. Keep a copy of that signed document in each employee’s file. Strictly-enforced harassment and discrimination policies will go a long way towards avoiding and defending claims... and keeping you out of court. For the simple answer to small business issues, I’m Michael Alter with your SurePayroll Minute. |
