Welcome to the SurePayroll minute.

I’m Michael Alter.

Employees often cringe when they know they’re going to receive a performance review.

But they really shudder if they have to review one of their direct reports.

While managers and employers may not enjoy them, performance reviews are essential.

If your business doesn’t have a formal review process, you should create one.

Performance reviews allow you to appreciate and motivate employees, and can help identify training needs.

They provide a way to mentor and develop employees.

They also can protect your business against lawsuits, serving as documentation of inadequate performance.

But reviews that are done badly can backfire if an employee walks away unclear about his or her goals or future opportunities with the company.

If your reviews are not well-received, you’ve got to re-think your objectives.

Does your review process allow you to clearly state employees’ achievements and failures?

Does it include a system for grading performance?

In other words, consider reviewing your review system!

For the simple answer to small business issues, I’m Michael Alter with your SurePayroll Minute.
