Soccer’s Highest Paid Players 2014

With the World Cup just more than a month away, we though it would be a good time to check in on today’s highest paid players, or footballers, in soccer. Professional soccer players who move to the top of the game are often times in position to earn tens of millions of dollars per year. Cristiano Ronaldo, the richest soccer player, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney make the top 25 highest paid athletes in the world, according to a separate list from ESPN. Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid make up three of the top five highest paying teams in sports, trailing only baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

So take a look at the list. Who do you think is over- or underpaid? Are they worth their cost to a team’s or sponsor’s payroll? You’ll notice the highest paid player from last year’s list, David Beckham, is gone as he has retired.

According to a new list from Forbes, these are 20 players leading the way, in terms of overall earnings, including soccer salaries, bonuses and endorsements as we head into the 2014 World Cup:

1. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid. Total earnings: $73 million.

2. Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona. Total earnings: $41.3 million.

3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paris Saint-Germain. Total earnings: $34 million.

Who’s Paying Them:Nike, Volvo

4. Neymar, FC Barcelona. Total earnings: $28 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Nike, Castrol, Panasonic, L’Oreal, Volkswagen

5. Radamel Falcao, AS Monaco. Total earnings: $26 million

Who’s Paying Them: Puma, Samsung, Gillette

6. Gareth Bale, Real Madrid. Total earnings: $24 million

Who’s Paying Them: Adidas, EA Sports, Lucozade

7. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United. Total earnings: $22 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Nike, Samsung, Harper Collins

8. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City. Total earnings: $21 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Puma, Pepsi, Gillette

9. Yaya Toure, Manchester City. Total earnings: $21 million.

10. Fernando Torres, Chelsea. Total earnings: $20 million.

11. Robin Van Persie, Manchester United. Total earnings: $19 million.

12. Franck Ribery, Bayern Munich. Total earnings: $18 million.

13. Steven Gerrard, Liverpool. Total earnings: $17 million.

14. David Silva, Manchester City. Total earnings: $16 million.

15. Frank Lampard, Chelsea. Total earnings. $16 million.

16. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern Munich. Total earnings: $16 million.

17. Mesut Ozil, Arsenal. Total earnings: $16 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Adidas, Kinder Eggs

18. Philipp Lahm, Bayern Munich. Total earnings: $15 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Adidas, Serviceplan

19. Kaka, AC Milan. Total earnings: $15 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Adidas, Hyundai, WiseUp

20. Louis Suarez, Liverpool. Total earnings: $15 million.

Who’s Paying Them: Adidas, Pepsi, Abitab

As you can see, many of the highest paid footballers earn millions upon millions of dollars every year. Just the same as any other sport, the top performing players are the ones bringing in the most money – not that the richest footballer is necessarily the best.

If you review our list of soccer’s highest paid players of 2013, you will find many of the same names. While some players come and go, many of those on the list above will continue to earn big money for years to come.
